Step 1: Admissions

The first step to become a student is to apply to the college. There are two different application processes to follow - one for students coming to the US temporarily (Study Abroad), and one for students who moved to the US (Resident).

Step 2: Placement Testing

After you finish applying, the second step is to check your English ability with our ESL Assessment Test so that we can help find the best classes for you. This test is free and you will need about 2-3 hours to complete it.

The test has three parts:

  • A handwritten Essay on a given topic that will test your Writing ability.
  • A Computer Assessment that will test your Reading, Vocabulary, and Grammar abilities.
  • An Oral Assessment that will test your Listening and Speaking abilities. This assessment might be at a different time or day than the Essay and Computer Assessments.

The essay and assessment on the computer you will do in-person in the Testing Center, and this can be done at any of the Collin College campuses. To schedule these, you will need your Campus Wide ID (CWID). You will get your CWID in an e-mail after you apply. When you have your CWID, please call or go to any Testing Center and tell them you would like to schedule an ESL Assessment Test. Please click HERE for a list of Testing Centers.

After your finish the essay and computer parts of the test, please email Mary South at esl@collin.edu to schedule the Oral Assessment part of the test which will check your Listening and Speaking ability.

Each semester has a deadline for completing the ESL Assessment Test, so please contact the Testing Centers or Mary South to find out the deadline for the current semester before you schedule your test.

Step 3: Registration and Program Costs

After your complete the ESL Assessment Test, you can register for your classes. We will be happy to talk with you to help you decide which classes are best and help you register.
